For several years, I have engaged in the study and research of this topic since 1975. I have compiled approximately 80 books (both hard and soft copies) and theses. Additionally, many of these works were created in South Africa, with some being in Afrikaans, including rare titles such as Die Heilige Doop - Die Sakrament in Gedrang (my first book) by Dr. FP Moller*, which is available for order in Kindle format on Amazon. The book Infant Baptism, edited by Prof. A Konig from the UNISA Symposium, is also accessible and currently in progress. You can find the complete list on my LibraryThing, along with comments and detailed information on Goodreads, and/or you may purchase or borrow from me via Librarika Web or App.
It is noteworthy that the research continues, particularly regarding events that transpired in certain South African Churches and within the Ecumenical context!
Below is just a short summary.
💧 What Is Baptism? A Spiritual Milestone
Baptism is a sacred Christian practice that symbolizes a believer’s spiritual rebirth, cleansing from sin, and public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus (Matthew 28:19), it marks a person’s entry into the Christian community and their commitment to live a transformed life.
✝️ Symbolism and Meaning
- Death & Resurrection: Going under water represents dying to the old self; rising up signifies new life in Christ (Romans 6:4).
- Cleansing: Water symbolizes purification and forgiveness of sins (Acts 22:16).
- Public Declaration: Baptism is a visible testimony of one’s inward faith and obedience to Christ.
📖 Biblical Foundation
- Jesus Himself was baptized by John the Baptist, setting an example of humility and obedience (Mark 1:9).
- Baptism is commanded in the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples… baptizing them…” (Matthew 28:19-20).
- It’s not what saves a person, but it reflects their salvation and union with Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9).
🕊️ Types of Baptism
- Water Baptism: Immersion or sprinkling, depending on tradition.
- Holy Spirit Baptism: A spiritual empowerment described in Acts 1:5.
- Infant vs. Believer’s Baptism: Varies across denominations, but all emphasize spiritual significance.
🌱 Why It Matters
Baptism is more than a ritual — it’s a powerful symbol of transformation, belonging, and faith. It connects believers to Christ’s journey and to one another in the body of Christ.
* Dr Moller, deceased now, was President of the AGS/AFM. A letter was written to the AGS/AFM Head Office, but no response. I think it is to old for duties.
