This information only relates now to the "Paarl-Worcester" Thearts of  "Oom Tol/MJ" who was married to Maregretha (?) de Bod(T). A Family Tree is on its way as I make corrections, and now many modern online sites have become available. There are about 200+ Thearts on Facebook!.

Theard Oat of Arms - A satire represents Suffering for one’s Faith and Perseverance in a True  Purpose.

 

Eldest brother Ray(mond)(13-02-1938 - 04-09-2005) passed away in Belville some time ago. With his first wife, Sylvia, he had Anton (Facebook?). With Etna, he had Hugo, deceased, but Bernard was floating between Paarl and some coastal town some years ago. Annemarie, the third child with Etna, was somewhere in Swellendam. His (Ray) two sons with his first wife, Silvia,  who still lives in de Bron Laan (opposite Parow on the way to Blaauwbergstrand), and his last son, Anton, were living with her and his wife. Then, Ludre-Ann lives in Secunda now (Facebook), is his daughter with Annette.

Martin (Facebook/WhatsApp) lives in George, and his son is with  Lettie (du Toit/de Swart, Raymond (Facebook). Small Raymond, as he became later known,  followed his career in the Arts, Drama, and Dance, and was the choreographer for the Afrikaans movie "Liefling" movie, and now lives in Canada. Then, he had a child with I think, someone at Correctional Services, with the name Melissa Voster Theart. I think she is now in Stellenbosch. (Facebook - locked) Was also married to Laeticia Zondagh(Facebook)(sister of my wife, Theresa). He married Leaticia, just a few days before me, but later also divorced with no children.

Juan, was married to Annemarie Kleynscheldt. He was murdered in Kraaifontein some years ago. He had two sons, Pierre (Facebook) and Theuns(Facebook). Pierre of Theuns se seun Drukus(g 23 Nov 1994) (Facebook). Pierre lives with his mom in Worcester. His mother, Annemarie, died in 2021.

Tersa, known as Tinkie (Fbook/Difficult to contact), is in Buffelsfontein in a Retirement home. She died some months ago (on 11 Jun 2022. Her two children, with Riedeman Huysamen (Facebook),  Rickus (Huyshamen)Fbook, in the USA, and Marde (Goosen)(Fbook). She was also later married to Koos van der Merwe, but divorced later.

Daniel [Deseaced 2014] (Facebook/Whatsup), het gebly in 'n aftree oord in Ellisras. Hy was getroud met Aletta Johanna Steyn (Lanie) met een seun,Marthinus (Thinus) Johannes (Fbook)(g 29-03-1971) Sy kinders is dogter Tinika Theart (23)(Facebook) en seun Tristan Theart (18) (Facebook - now deleted?). Sy vrou is Veronica. Hullle woon tans naby Vredendal net buite Lutzville in Weskaap. Drukus (Facebook), married to Mechayla Ward. (Facebook).

He also had a daughter, Daniela(Facebook), with Suzette Theart (Facebook).

Daar is ook  Niki (Habig)(Facebook) dogter wat hy by Ingrid gehad het. (Ook 'n Daniel en Michelle en Maryke kinders, maar ek weet nie hulle ma se name nie)

Marlene, the eldest sister, died many years ago in a pedestrian accident in died Strand. Her daughter with Jos, Joslene, was last seen in Bloemfontein. I am trying to trace her as she is my niece and we were born on the same day (26 June 1960). GP le Roux (Facebook), Marlene’s son with uncle Hans (deceased), lives in Ceres. Was married to Anita van Zyl and had Anneka (30) and  Gian (25), both living in Bredasdorp. He is now married to Heather Christonita Swart.

Abri(e), (Facebook), now retired pensioner, married to Theresa Zondagh, is retired and lives on a plot in Monrick AH, Centurion in Pretoria. Theresa's daughter is Yolandie Beukes.

There you go, five brothers, two sisters. 

We are from the Thearts of Veldrif, and my father’s name was Martinus Johannes Theart, also known as “Oom Tol.” He was born in Piketberg, was a builder in Paarl, and died in Piketberg. According to M.J. (Thinus) Theart's Newsletter on the Theart/Thiiart/Thiaardt Webpage (2018), many Thearts (25!) were also born in Piketberg. So it could be that our fathers' family came from there.

My mom was Mageretha de Bod (T?), who died in Paarl (stroke) when I was 13. – 1973. I only remember visiting her sister on a farm outside Worcester and Vredendal. I think a son of hers was Christo, who was a friend (Nephew of the oldest son) Raymond Theart. As a child, we also visited some relatives in Botrivier.

The Theart/Thiiart/Thiaardt Homepage's owner, who lives in Garsfontein, Pretoria East, has done some research on us and had the last input from Uncle Ray. Please check his Nuusbrief on site! Notice the occurrences for "Piketberg." This should enable some to trace their relationship to my Theart Family.

We have been here in South Africa since 1652. The artists were builders, carpenters, fishermen, and farmers. First wives came on the “Alabama ship, sent from Batavia with women/wives for the lonely workers at the Cape. Apparently, the song “Daar kom die Ali-bama” is associated with us.

The surname Theart, which is also found in the forms “Theard” and “Thiart”, originated in Franse as a patronymic name, one based upon the given name of the father of the initial bearer.
Here, the surname was inspired by the old Germanic personal name “Theadhard”, itself derived from the Gothic word “thiuda”, denoting “people” or “folk”, and the Old High German “harti” an adjective meaning “hard” or “severe”. This and other Germanic names were introduced into what was to become France but the Franks, a Germanic people whom established a kingdom in Northern France and the Low Countries in the aftermath of the fall of Rome. 

As the Franks expanded southward to encompass all of what the Romans had called “Gaul”, their personal names were disseminated through the land, as even members of the Gallo-Roman majority began to favour the Germanic names in imitation of their rulers.

“Claude Thiard” )1620 – 1701) was a soldier who distinguished himself in campaigns in Calalonia, Flanders and Franche-Comté, attaining the rank of field marshal in 1672. He subsequently served Louis XIV as governor of Auxonne and commander of military districts of Lorraine and Luxembourg, while writing an account of his experiences of fighting the Turks in Hungary.

 Research indicates that the South African families who today bear the surnames Theart and Thiart are descended from Heinrich Thiart (also known as Theart), a native of the town Rutsweiler in Lorraine who arrived in the Cape as a soldier in 1752. He later worked as a wagon driver and a farm and became a citizen of the colony in 1760. On 15 January 1764, Thiart wed Regina Elisabeth Alhabama of Batavia, with whom he was to have six children.

Stamvaders: (1) Johan Ernst Broens, van Uchte in Hesse-Schaumburg (Duitsland). Kom in 1778 hier aan as verpleër in diens van die V.O.C. Hy het die diens in 1785 verlaat. Trou 9.3.1788 met Anna Catharina Elisabeth Theart, dogter van Heinrich Theart (6 kinders). (2) Jacob Broens, van Edewecht (Duitsland). Soldaat sedert 1787, later sersant. Trou 1.11.1795 met Johanna Magdalena Christiaanse, wed. van Nikolaas Christoffel Denner.

THIART

Betekenis: Oorspronklik Thiadhart, afgelei van die Germaanse voornaam Theodharde, d.i. magtige volk.

Stamvader: Hendrik of Heinrich Thiart, ook genoem Theart en Tischaar, van Rutsweiler in Lotharinge (vandag Frankryk). Kom in 1752 hier aan as soldaat; later wadrywer en boukneg. Burger in 1760. Trou 15.1.1764 met Regina Elisabeth Alhabama, van Batavia, ged. 25.12.1763 (6 kinders).
